Programs & Services

If you or someone you know is abused or assaulted, call our 24-hour crisis line at 919.403.6562 to access any of the following services:

24-Hour Crisis Line: The crisis line serves as the gateway to all of the shelter and support services offered by DCRC, including case management, counseling, and legal advocacy. Trained advocates are available 24 hours a day to provide support through active listening, crisis intervention, community referrals, safety planning and emergency room accompaniment for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. All calls are confidential. Spanish speaking callers can be connected to bilingual staff 9-5pm, Monday through Friday.

Information and Case Management: DCRC office staff is available during regular office hours (Monday – Friday, 9-5pm) to provide information, one-one-one support, and advocacy for survivors of domestic violence or sexual assault to address any needs that they may have to rebuild their lives free from violence.

Sexual Assault Services for Individuals & Families: DCRC provides services to any teen or adult who has been affected by sexual violence, regardless of when the sexual assault/abuse occurred. DCRC also encourages any individual who is affected by the sexual assault/abuse of a loved one to call and connect with our programs. These programs and services include personal case management, crisis intervention and ongoing emotional support, and advocacy and accompaniment (to court, the hospital, and follow-up medical appointments). DCRC also offers information on the effects of sexual violence and abuse, resources for survivors, safety planning and safety options, support groups, in-person support sessions, as well as professional counseling for the trauma of sexual assault and for adults who have survived childhood sexual abuse.

Legal Advocacy: Durham Crisis Response Center provides information, support and advocacy for victims of domestic and sexual violence throughout the criminal or civil justice system. The DCRC Legal Advocate does not provide legal representation or advice, only advocacy; she may answer questions about what to expect, explain the options available, refer survivors to other DCRC services, assist with safety planning, and accompany survivors through any criminal or civil process to ensure their rights. She is on-site at the Durham County Courthouse, Monday through Wednesday, to assist with protection orders or to accompany clients to criminal court. Free Legal Clinics are held every 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month, from 5:00 pm until 6:30 PM at our office, 206 N. Dillard Street. Local attorneys provide pro bono advice, answering questions about separation, divorce, child custody, immigration, criminal proceedings and civil orders for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Survivors’ Groups: Durham Crisis Response Center offers support groups to adult and adolescent survivors who are currently or have previously experienced domestic violence and sexual assault. Support groups encourage participants to explore their experiences in a safe and supportive environment. Some recent groups include Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse, Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse, Domestic Violence Survivors and Teen Survivors of Sexual Assault.

Specialized Safety Programs: The Durham Crisis Response Center offers alarm systems, 911 ready cell phones, and safety planning free of charge to high-risk victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Temporary Emergency Shelter: The shelter gives women and children a safe and supportive environment where they can begin to recover from the effects of domestic violence. The shelter offers case management and counseling, as well as assistance with legal, housing, and employment needs. Spanish-speaking staff is available.
